As DC's Crisis trilogy comes to a conclusion, I find it somewhat amusing that DC's superhero continuity is, at the least, just as confuddled and complex as it was in the pre-Crisis days. Granted this could change in the final months. Even if it does, DC (and Marvel) will reach another point in the future where the continuity of their characters and major events become like one of those knots you find when it comes time to pull out the Christmas lights.
On a sidenote, these large-scale comic title crossover epics e.g. Civil War, Final Crisis, Secret Invasion are criticized for the number of titles one must purchase in order to get the "whole" story (and sometimes even the main story). This is particularly problematic in DC where Batman, Superman, Justice League, Justice Society, Teen Titans, Green Lantern, and Flash have all had numerous incarnations and spinoff titles; in Marvel... Spider-Man, Punisher, the X-Men, Iron Man, and Captain America have all had their share of continuity reboots and simultaneous publications convuluting their histories.
I am not opposed to multiple titles. What I don't get is why these two publishers believe that these titles all have to share the same continuity. Marvel is in much better shape than DC in that when they decided to reinvent many of the core titles, they did so within a contained environment via the "Ultimates" continuity. But why not extend this to the regular titles instead of starting a new one?
If I had any influence at these companies, I would proclaim all characters or groups with (or in) multiple titles to be be ended--the titles I mean. Each title would then restart as a new volume, and one title would be determined to be the flagship title in the "core canon", that canon being the one shared by all characters, taking place in the modern day, within that publisher's catalog. The rest of the titles would be assigned the following unique continuties, ALL seperate from the "core canon" except where it is listed as "flagship title"; if a title isn't listed, it would remain ended--and I do recognise that certain amount of cleaning up would still need to be done, but at least the titles would have clearly defined lines (and logos on the covers)...
